42nd or Royal Highlanders Officer’s Sporran

A 42nd or Royal Highlanders Officers goat hair sporran comprising a gilt brass cantle with a matted ground and thistle border and a standing figure of the apostle holding the St Andrews cross in the center with the Arabic numerals for 42 underneath. Five gilt cord and basket work tassels are suspended over the top of the grey white goat hair.
The reverse comprises a red morocco leather pocket with two tabs above to hold a sporran belt. Overall in very nice original condition and scarce to find a 42 regimentally marked example.
The 42nd were amalgamated with the 73rd regiment in 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms to form the Black Watch and therefore given the regimental designation this sporran can be dated prior to 1881.
