A 57th or West MIddlesex Regiment of Foot Albert Shako
A 57th or West MIddlesex Regiment of Foot Albert Shako worn by Captain Hector Monroe. The shako comprises a beaver skin body with patent leather front and rear peaks which are lined with leather skiver.
To the front is the regimental pattern shako plate in rich fire gilt with the universal seven point star with battle honors in each arm. At the top is a QVC crown and in the center a palm and laurel leaf wreath surrounding a strap with West Middlesex and an Arabic 57 in the center, all in rich fire gilt.
On each side of the shako are regulation gilt ear bosses which secure the roped chin chain in position. Overall the shako is in nice condition and as often found is missing much of the original beaver knap that would have originally existed.
The 57th fought at the battle of Inkerman in November 1854 and the seige of Sebastopol in the winter of 1854. The regiment is credited with two Victoria Crosses during the Crimean campaign.
