92nd Gordon Highlanders Regiment of Foot Officers Hallmarked Plaid Broach

An officer’s hallmarked 1881 silver plaid broach to the 92nd Gordon Highlanders comprising a silver circular badge with a central stags head issuing from a ducal coronet within a wreath of Ivy and the regimental motto BYDAND which translates to watchful. Around the edges of the broach are battle honors for Peninsula, Waterloo, Egypt and India and Gordon Highlanders.
The reverse of broach has the makers name R and HB Kirkwood, Thistle Street, Edinburgh and clear hallmarks showing the Victoria Head, Scottish Asay mark and the date letter Z. There is also what appears to be an owner’s name MACBEAN scratched onto the silver which may make for some interesting research.
Hallmarked plaid broaches are becoming rare to find and this particular example is in wonderful condition with clear hallmarks for 1881.
