Green Chinese Export Trunk
A good early 19th century dark green Chinese export trunk in leather on camphor wood with brass stud decoration and corners. The leather has darkened with the passage of time to an almost black patina and the brass decoration now displays a dark lustre.
Camphor wood was a popular choice for campaign and travelling trunks. Its natural odour acts as a very affective insect repellent and hence helped prevent damage to clothing by moth and other insects.
Although originally produced in their thousands they are hard to find in good condition. The dimensions of this example are ideal for use as a coffee table or simply as a useful storage receptacle.
